Things to do at the Atlas Coal Mine
At the Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site, you can take a guided tour up into the giant tipple mine - eight stories high amongst the giant machinery and miles of conveyor belts. Your guide will also take you for a short ride in the antique coal cars (also called a mantrip).

If you arrive after a tour has already started, the next one will be starting soon. In the meantime, enjoy the exhibits and the documentary Thunder in the Valley, or simply soak up the ambiance of the most complete coal mining museum in Canada. While you're exploring, be sure to visit the restored mine offices, wash house, battery shack, and the original miner's shack - built of straw, mud, and manure.

This is an outdoor attraction so dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and if you’re tall, be prepared to duck because miners were pretty short in the old days. And while the Atlas does not offer underground tours, it is the only tipple mine left standing in Canada - making a tour of the Atlas like no other experience in the country.
